I passed (by the skin of my teeth) my Grade 8 flute exam in May and am now discovering what comes next. It turns out that 'what comes next' is playing more of the music that I have avoided until now, which mostly means modern music.
Specifically, it means Tango Etude No. 5. I listened to it, it sounded awful. It's quite fun to play though, so I have been practising with some enthusiasm. Apparently my family aren't enjoying it so much though.
The other day, I had to stop practising because the tutting from upstairs made me laugh. It was followed by a "thank goodness for that" when I started to play something else.
Etude No. 5 is on the new Trinity grade 7 syllabus - I can't help thinking of all the famillies who are going to be treated to months of practice. On which note, I asked my flute teacher for some advice on how to practice the last phrase - apparently just repetition. I think this might be part of my objection to modern music and jazz.
